Daisy has her first dental surgery

When I got to vet’s Tuesday morning, I had one disappointed Beagle with me! “What, no breakfast, and now you bring me HERE, do you have mush for brains???”

Well I can laugh now but I was worried all day. Finally I went to get her at 6 pm. The total was almost $200 more than predicted, they had her under for almost 2 hours… The vet showed me her x-rays.

Upper teeth: not bad, they only took out the 4 middle incisors, the rest seem OK.

Lower teeth: not nice. There is missing bone at the base of the canines, and it is this that could have caused a fracture when they were getting a canine out.

The reason they couldn’t do both canines at once is that, should the jaw break when they do the second canine, there is no more jaw left to wire together for it to heal … so she needs a second surgery in 3 months. They filled the empty root space of the canine with a substance called Consil, a sort of cement which will promote growth of bone cells and reconstruct a jaw there in 2 or 3 months. So the other teeth come out in 3 months. Now she gets soft food for two weeks so the Consil can harden, then she can go back to dry.

OK, enough medicine, on to the peculiar Beagle psychology. They bring Daisy out. I am not prepared for emotional manipulation and all out beagle “patheticness” … She is pathetic, to the extreme, as you can see, yet with a great show of innocent brown eyes, bravely holds up her little head so we can stroke her throat. A-ha! That was the 1st sign she was going to be fine. The second sign was that she wanted to eat as soon as we got home LOL

Now she is doing very well and is almost back to her normal self :0)

Lil Sunshine Softie Daisy, she is too cute…
