Blue Moon in the News!

The Chesterville Record’s reporter Cathy Thompson met with us last week and her paper published this nice article about our rescue. We really appreciate this opportunity to talk about our wonderful foster dogs to the members of our local community. Read the article here:

If you would like to help, there are several opportunities for people with skills in communication, Photoshop, other computer work, application screening for foster homes and adopters, sewing, marketing and fundraising. Please contact us for a chat!

Thank You for Your Help with Surgical Costs!

It’s been a very busy Fall and Winter here at Blue Moon! Thanks to the fundraising efforts of our volunteers and the public’s generosity, we have been able to complete Sammy’s pre-op treatment and get Maya her dental surgery! Woohoo! Next on the surgical list will be Bluebell and then Sammy!

Bluebell’s Surgery

We are now raising funds for Bluebell’ surgery and still need about $350-400 to be able to book it. Please help our most adorable little senior Mama dog get the care she needs soon. You can Chip-In here, or visit our Petfinder page for more donation options:

Basic Foster Dog Care Costs

Thank you so much to those who helped us before Christmas… we are now almost caught up in current basic foster dog care to December 31st. We have created a new Chip-In for January ad February. The amount includes the basic vetting for 3 new dogs and basic care costs for all regular foster dogs for both months:

We could not do any of this without the public’s valuable support – YOUR support – and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts! Please subscribe to this Blog and share it with your friends. You are also very welcome to join us on Facebook, just search for Blue Moon Rescue!

Rescue Is For Life

July News and Events

So many news to catch up on … we have been very busy!

MILESTONE 50

While we definitely focus on quality rather than quantity for adoptions in a small rescue like Blue Moon, it did give us some pleasure to note that Theo’s recent adoption marked our 50th adoption in the time we have been on the Internet – I never counted them in the 20 years before we “modernized” Fifty beautiful and deserving dogs who would have died without rescue, and without the financial and practical help of persons like you. On behalf of all these wonderful “pups” we thank you most sincerely!

SAMMY NEEDS YOUR HELP

Sammy is a very sweet boy with an extremely sad history…  but we can give him a brighter future with your help. Please see his profile and help if you can. Any amount, big or small, will help get him the care he needs.

NEW! Donations for Sammy can now be delivered to Severson Cleaners at 68 William Street in Brockville! Thank you to the Severson family for their support!

NEW! To make a tax deductible donation, please make cheques payable to Helping Homeless Pets (What is that?  Details below) Of course, you can also donate via Paypal as before.

BLUEBELL ALSO NEEDS YOUR HELP

Bluebell breaks our hearts … neglected her whole life, this sweetest of girls may be the first dog we are not able to cure. Please read her profile and help us get her the biopsy that will tell us what we can do to make her comfortable for whatever time she has with us, be it a few months or many years… We hope and pray for the latter result… we love you, sweet Bluebell!

DONATIONS CAN NOW BE TAX DEDUCTIBLE IN CANADA!

Blue Moon Rescue is very proud to announce that we have been accepted as members of Helping Homeless Pets, a Canadian Registered Charity. To make a tax deductible donation to Blue Moon via cheque or credit card, please click on this link and be sure to note Blue Moon on your donation!

WE NEED A FOSTER HOME COORDINATOR

Blue Moon has several heavy duty medical cases right now that require a lot of fund raising… We have also lost several foster homes because they fell in love with their foster dog and adopted him/her, moved away, or are going back to school soon. We need someone who can help with recruiting, screening and helping foster homes so we can take new dogs into our program.

What does a foster coordinator do? What kind of person would enjoy that particular challenge? If you are intrigued and want to know more, stay tuned, we will post a “job description” as soon as time permits… hopefully sometime this week. If you have done it before, don’t be shy, go ahead and contact us now :0)

and last but definitely not least…

THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS!

Until now, Blue Moon Rescue had pretty well always been a one-woman show, but I am very happy to say that this year several wonderful volunteers have stepped up to help and working with them has been stimulating and very rewarding. Whether they are fostering a dog, helping with training, planning benefits, or helping organize our work, I hope they know how deeply grateful I am for their assistance and their great love for and steadfast loyalty to our fabulous and oh-so-deserving dogs. Aroooo! You are the best!!

Daisy has her first dental surgery

When I got to vet’s Tuesday morning, I had one disappointed Beagle with me! “What, no breakfast, and now you bring me HERE, do you have mush for brains???”

Well I can laugh now but I was worried all day. Finally I went to get her at 6 pm. The total was almost $200 more than predicted, they had her under for almost 2 hours… The vet showed me her x-rays.

Upper teeth: not bad, they only took out the 4 middle incisors, the rest seem OK.

Lower teeth: not nice. There is missing bone at the base of the canines, and it is this that could have caused a fracture when they were getting a canine out.

The reason they couldn’t do both canines at once is that, should the jaw break when they do the second canine, there is no more jaw left to wire together for it to heal … so she needs a second surgery in 3 months. They filled the empty root space of the canine with a substance called Consil, a sort of cement which will promote growth of bone cells and reconstruct a jaw there in 2 or 3 months. So the other teeth come out in 3 months. Now she gets soft food for two weeks so the Consil can harden, then she can go back to dry.

***********
OK, enough medicine, on to the peculiar Beagle psychology. They bring Daisy out. I am not prepared for emotional manipulation and all out beagle “patheticness” … She is pathetic, to the extreme, as you can see, yet with a great show of innocent brown eyes, bravely holds up her little head so we can stroke her throat. A-ha! That was the 1st sign she was going to be fine. The second sign was that she wanted to eat as soon as we got home LOL

Now she is doing very well and is almost back to her normal self :0)

Lil Sunshine Softie Daisy, she is too cute…

Daisy’s surgery is postponed!

***March 17th Update – They did not perform Daisy’s surgery yesterday! Getting started they noticed there might be degradation of the lower jaw bone and they were afraid that if they tried to do it all in one shot, her tiny lower jaw might fracture…

So we have scheduled her for dental x-rays NEXT Tuesday at the sister clinic in Morrisburg that has the proper machine, and then based on that they will either remove all the lower front teeth at once, or just some of them (and then plan for a second session later)

So we get to go through all of this pre-op worry again in a week… oh joy :-S Plus if there are two surgeries, we’ll have to raise funds later for the second session (& x-rays) Oh well, our little Ray of Doggie Sunshine Daisy is worth it! More news next week then.

We do not need any new funds for Daisy until we find out what the second surgery will be like, but Lizzie’s surgery still needs to be planned for. If you are able to assist, please contribute to her Chip-In! See our home page here:

http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/ON283.html

Thank you!

Lizzie and Daisy need your help!

Our sweet foster girls Lizzie and Daisy both require surgery.

Exotic beauty Lizzie has a serious problem with her thigh and hip joint that can be corrected by a rather complicated – and pricey – surgical procedure. The estimate, including tests and post-op care is about $1800.

Little mini Beagle Daisy needs dental extractions; we have scheduled surgery for March 16th but are still short about $380 to cover its cost.

Please help these two lovely girls get the needed care so they can live pain free and go on to their forever homes! More details can be found on each girl’s profile page on our Petfinder page.

We have created two separate Chip-Ins so you can contribute to vetting for the dog of your choice. Any amount is appreciated… if all your friends and family contribute $2, $3 or $5 apiece, that will add up very quickly!

You will find the Chip-In links here:

http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/ON283.html

There are other methods to contribute… visit our Petfinder Home Page or contact us for details!

We are most grateful for all assistance you are able to provide so we may get Lizzie and Daisy the care they need as soon as possible.

Letting go can be hard, but fostering is so rewarding

To My Guardian Angel

There I sat, alone and afraid,
You got a call and came right to my aid.

You bundled me up with blankets and love.
And, when I needed it most, you gave me a hug.

I learned that the world was not all that scary and cold.
That sometimes there is someone to have and to hold.

You taught me what love is, you helped me to mend.
You loved me and healed me and became my first friend.

And just when I thought you’d done all you do,
There came along not one new lesson, but two.

First you said, “Sweet baby, you’re ready to go.
I’ve done all I can, and you’ve learned all I know.”

Then you bundled me up with a blanket and kiss.
Along came a new family, they even have kids!

They took me to their home, forever to stay.
At first I thought you sent me away.

Then that second lesson became perfectly clear.
No matter how far, you will always be near.

And so, my guardian angel you know I’ve moved on.
I have a new home, with toys and a lawn.

But I’ll never forget what I learned that first day.
You never really give your fosters away.

You gave me these thoughts to remember you by.
We may never meet again, and now I know why.

You’ll remember I lived with you for a time.
I may not be yours, but you’ll always be mine.

Happy, but with a tug at my heart…

I just received new pictures and an update from Sue, Bailey’s adopter!

“She’s a fantastic dog – I have her in dog obedience – we are at the intermediate level and she’s doing great. She loves to play with other dogs and she’s getting so much better with people. The class is great because there are 2 kids and she’s really doing well with them – not shy at all. (…)”

I am so happy she is doing well, but this one is hard. Every now and then there is that dog you wish you could keep, one with whom you feel a special bond … Bailey dug so deep into my heart, I know she’ll be there always.

From scrawny, shy, abandoned little baby Blakely at Rowan pound a year and a half ago….

To big beautiful oh-so-loved Bailey, what a wonderful journey for our girl! Check out the original white pantaloons at the back of her thighs! Have to get a close-up of that one day :0)

Sue, thank you for giving our Bailey such a great home and life!

Adopted Puma says Happy New Year!

Oh Puma, Happy New Year!  To think it took many months of anxious waiting for us to find this wonderful girl a home. No one who meets her can understand it, she is a perfect sweetheart. Tamara and Vadim, thank you for giving her the family she needed!
